Located on eastern Staten Island, Shore Acres is a desirable neighborhood due to its proximity to transit as well as offering amazing views of the New York City skyline.
The upper class neighborhood features stately homes and tree-lined streets, many with amazing views.
Surrounding the area residents can access a variety of public and private schools, which explains why the area is popular for families.
Within Shore Acres, you can find a few playgrounds and parks, as well as Alice Austen House – a historic landmark located on the shoreline that honors one of America’s earliest female photographers and features her residence, a one-room Dutch farmhouse that dates back to 1690.
Via public transport, residents of Shore Acres can also access the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan. From there, you can walk to Battery Park and points beyond, or simply enjoy the ride which offers an amazing view of the New York skyline and a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty.
There are a few shopping opportunities within Shore Acres, such as a general store, deli, and pharmacy – but for major expenditures shoppers will have to travel. Just over the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Brooklyn are major chain stores. Also, Tysen's Park Shopping Center on Hylan Blvd is just a 15 minute drive.
Although a desirable neighborhood, Shore Acres offers limited public transit options. The S51/81 bus runs down Bay Street to the St. George Ferry terminal (to access the Staten Island Ferry) or to Grant City. Just outside the boundaries of Shore Acres, residents can access the S52 bus on Tompkins avenue, with service to the St. George Ferry terminal as well as Staten Island University Hospital.
For drivers, Shore Acres offers quick access to the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge (tolled), which goes east through Brooklyn. Going west on the Staten Island Expressway provides access to the Dr Martin Luther King Jr. Expressway and the Bayonne Bridge into Lower Manhattan.
As an area that features stately homes, Shore Acres still has a surprising number of apartments for rent in the area at reasonable prices. One bedroom apartments in Shore Acres start at about $1000 per month while a 3 bedroom apartment can start at $1500 per month.
