Neighborhood Description

Park Versailles is a Bronx neighborhood located just to the west of Parkchester, a residential neighborhood in the east Bronx.

The Bronx River Parkway and Cross Bronx Expressway intersect at the middle of Park Versailles, making it an easy commute for public transit users and drivers alike. Van Nest is to the northeast of Park Versailles, Parkchester is to the east, Clason Point is to the south, and the Bronx River is to the west. Park Versailles’ centralized location makes it a convenient option for those wanting to live in the Bronx, while still having easy access to Manhattan and the other boroughs.

In the 1940s, Park Versailles and Parkchester was a popular location for returning World War II soldiers to settle down, due primarily to affordability and proximity to nearby opportunities. Although many aspects of living were segregated, many races lived in peace throughout and after wartime. Today, Park Versailles hosts one of the most diverse demographics in the east Bronx. While whites, blacks, and Latinos comprise a large part of the population, emerging South Asian populations are abundant, with families from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and others settling in Park Versailles. The neighborhood’s history of racial diversity has carried into the 21st century.

Those living in Park Versailles clearly consider Westchester Avenue the neighborhood’s primary thoroughfare. In addition to almost all public transit hubs being on the avenue, the majority of local businesses stretch along this area. In the north-center of Park Versailles is Noble Playground, which features a baseball field and playground. The Bronx Zoo is also only a five minute drive to the northwest, with the New York Botanical Garden just a mile north of that. Park Versailles residents may have to leave the neighborhood for specialty items or services, but Westchester Avenue offers all the standard establishments.

Many Park Versailles residents live along the side streets of Westchester Avenue, where the bus and subway stops are located. As a result, they only have to walk a few blocks to get the closest subway station, the 6 train, or the Bx27, Bx4, and Bx4a bus stops. There bus and subway stops are placed fairly evenly along Westchester Avenue, helping make accessible public transit one of the several appealing aspects of living in Park Versailles.
