Originally known as "Yellow Hook," Bay Ridge was named for its yellowish soil. A prominent Scandinavian community developed in the waterfront area, and the population has grown to include numerous other ethnic groups. Today, Bay Ridge maintains its heritage while welcoming newcomers and new cultures. The neighborhood has a high elderly population with 20% of the population 60 years or over. Historic houses and third or fourth generation families living nearby are common sights in the area. International restaurants and bars add color to Bay Ridge's main streets. Although residents are typically opposed to new construction that demolishes old houses, apartment complexes have been appearing. Abundant outdoors space, such as 69th Street Pier, as well as the opportunity to own a home in a neighborhood with a stable, small-town atmosphere will continue to draw new residents to Bay Ridge.
