Many NYC residents are adamant about searching only West Village Apartments for rent and won't consider any other neighborhood. Considering the concessions and compromises a Manhattan renter must make, this "obsession" with the neighborhood is notable. We forgo privacy and make a 2-bedroom accommodate 4 roommates and accept sleeping in a room with enough space for a bed and nothing more. These things are simply part of rental life in Manhattan. But some people have a list of non-negotiable items and for a lucky few that means living in the West Village.
Long considered an impossible pipe dream, the West Village (commonly referred to simply as "WV") can actually be a reality for those who are willing to give up space and... cash. The WV offers quaint cobble stone streets, small restaurants with a European vibe, and every Marc Jacobs store imaginable.
The first rule to living here is the lack of space. You will not find big West Village apartments for rent unless you’re willing to spend upwards of $4000/month on a 1-bedroom. Having said that, what you give up in space you are likely to gain in charm. Most options in this gem of a neighborhood have architectural details that are lost in today’s new construction monsters. Hardwood floors, fireplaces (both functioning and not), and arched hallways are just a few of the details you are likely to come across. Not to say that the area doesn’t have great new construction to offer. Many buildings off of the West Side Highway offer full-service accommodations that include on-site gyms and doormen. So what these buildings may lack in charm they more than make-up for in amenities.
Once you’ve moved in, you'll find that you spend more time roaming the neighborhood than enjoying your place. The area has many of the city’s best dinning destinations (Little Owl, Centro Vinoteca, Corner Bistro) and bars (Employees Only, Little Branch, Blind Tiger). So what you spend on extra rent, you can save on taxis! It’s not easy to find great West Village apartments for rent, but if you do come across one and can make it work, you’ll be in for quite a treat because the neighborhood still manages to feel like Manhattan at its finest.
