Nicknamed “Skyville” by locals, East Bronx neighborhood Schuylerville is home to mostly middle-class residents living in single-family and two-family housing.Read more about Schuylerville
Schuylerville is located between Bruckner Expressway and Hutchinson River Parkway, next to comparable residential neighborhoods Pelham Bay and Country Club. Over the past decade, the neighborhood has ascended from fairly typical housing and establishments to feature more luxury development, such as condos and contemporary two-family housing. The neighborhood is largely Italian with some Hispanic and black populations, contributing to a diverse yet active community that offers a variety of local establishments, from Award-winning Cuban and Mexican restaurants (Havana Café, La Lupita) to beer gardens (Hops Beer Garden).
Residents of Schuylerville also have more nearby park options than most New York City residents. Bufano Park, featuring basketball courts and playgrounds, is in the neighborhood, while the very spacious Pelham Bay Park is nearby. Also, a public beach (Orchard Beach) is only five miles away. As a result, Schuylerville is a great option for residents that enjoy outdoor activities but still want to remain within close proximity of the city. Many of the restaurants and stores in Schuylerville are conveniently located along E Tremont Avenue, which is close to a section of the Pelham Bay Park.
In Schuylerville, various restaurants compete to be the best in their niche. Competition pays off in this case. Most of the pizza establishments in Schuylerville are excellent, but Louie & Ernie's Pizza and Loretta's Pizza are two of the most renowned. Cuban restaurant Havana Cafe is also a popular stop for its unlimited sangria special and famed churrasco (skirt steak), while La Lupita offers affordable but delicious Mexican staples like tacos and enchiladas. Regardless of the food type you’re looking for, you’re likely to find it in “Skyville.”
Most Schuylerville residents drive to get where they’re going, since the neighborhood lacks in public transit compared to other Bronx locations. Still, the Buhre Ave station on the IRT Pelham Line is only one mile north, so driving is not an absolute necessity. Several bus lines run through Schuylerville as well, including the Bx5, Bx8, Bx40/42, and the Q50 to Flushing or Co-op City.
