Nearly all Morningside Heights apartment buildings were constructed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Along Morningside and Riverside Parks are large, impressive buildings, many of which are full-service. In between these buildings, townhouses line the side streets. These townhouses are a mix of single family and multifamily structures. If you need new construction, as opposed to old world charm, you are going to have a more difficult apartment search.
Unfortunately, the secret that was Morningside has largely discovered. Studio apartments cost ~$1,600 per month. One bed apartments cost ~$2,000 a month. And two bedroom apartments cost ~$2,500 per month. On top of that, most brokered apartments in Morningside Heights require the renter to pay a fee.
Assuming you are successful renting an apartment here, there are some fantastic benefits to the neighborhood. In terms of location, you are removed from the hustle of Manhattan, but not too far away. There’s relatively easy access to the 1, A, B and C trains. 42nd Street is only 15 minutes away. Columbus Circle is only 16 minutes away and Union Square can be reached in just under a half an hour. In addition, you have access to three fantastic parks in Morningside Park, Riverside Park and Central Park (to the South).
The neighborhood is on upper Manhattan and is where Columbia University is located. Much of the neighborhood has a "college town" feel to it as professors live nearby and thousands of students make it their home. The neighborhood begins at 110th Street and runs to 125th Street. It’s bordered by Morningside Park on the West and Riverside Park on the East and along the Hudson.
