The thing about clearing out unwanted and unloved items is it feels great. We are clearing out space and clearing our minds. In my experience working with New Yorkers, once I get them going, they are inspired to clear out more unwanted stuff.
After you feel you’ve at least made a dent in the garbage or in the various broken things in your home, try your mind at your clothing. Clothing is a big part of our identity, our ego or our “I,” so it pays big time to take a closer look at the stuff in our closets we’re wearing and not wearing. A very healthy loosening up of our identity can occur. You might ask yourself now, “Do I like my identity? What is it I identify with?” Get an idea of whether you even want to loosen it up at all.
I’ve heard that a helpful rule is if you haven’t worn it in the past year, pass it on. An exception to this is your shoes. Shoes come back and if you’re a woman, that coming and going of styles happens with regular consistency. Shoes are worth keeping and if you have a little extra storage space (Does it feel like I just asked you if you have a summer home on the moon?) put away shoes you are tired of and bring them out in a couple of seasons and they will be new to you.
