I have to admit any art found on the street, not to be confused with actual “street art”, generally feels a little too generic for my taste. The majority of work sold on West Broadway in SoHo (circa Prince St. to Grand St.) is not much different. However, it is still a cool place to browse for interesting pieces to embellish your empty walls until your art-collector ship comes in.
The diversity of work is what gives this street its appeal as a good starting point in looking for art, everything from wall-size paintings on unstretched canvas to 5”x6” photographs. My personal favorites are bright little ink prints of different dogs. Sound a little hokey? Maybe, but at least I didn’t say cats.
Saturday and Sunday are the best shopping days for this weekly makeshift art fair, though in the summer weekdays deliver just as many artists. And these are no fair-weather art vendors. Some have been known to stand guard at their creative forts through the dead of winter, so it’s well worth the effort on your part to grant them a visit. While you are there, you can also check out the diverse gallery scene in SoHo .
