A Scrub You (and the Earth) Will Love

When we moved into a new apartment a few months ago, all newly renovated with the latest in eco-friendly features, it made me realize it was time to get serious about doing away with some of my less than eco-friendly regular purchases.

We typically used those yellow and green dish sponges around the kitchen, for both washing dishes and wiping countertops. We’d have to toss them out every few weeks, once they’d get grimy and disgusting. Finally, I came across these great handmade dish scrubbies on Etsy. They’re machine washable and only $3 each.

I ordered a couple and they’ve been such a lifesaver. Just toss ‘em in the wash with your dirty laundry to get rid of the daily grime. The hand-knit texture actually helps a lot with scrubbing off dried-on food particles. That had been my main reason for not using a regular dish towel for some dirty kitchen jobs… sometimes they’re just too smooth to get off the crusty stuff! These scrubbies work well and do their job, plus I find them easier to hold onto than a bulky dish towel when washing the dishes.

Of course, we fill up our automatic dishwasher and run it for most dishes. (That’s the most water-efficient way to go, of course.) But there are always some dishes that just need to be done by hand, and these handmade dish scrubbies do the trick!
