Throw Your Own Dinner Party! You Will Be Surprised at What You *Don’t* Need!

So now you know how to respond to a dinner party invitation, and how to act once you get there, but let’s say you get tired of waiting around to be asked (much like the 7th grade dance) and just want to break out and have people over? Of course, I think this is the best idea EVER, since I throw many more dinners than I am asked to. Below are some ideas to get you started, things that Martha Stewart and Emily Post never bothered to tell you.

Do it with a friend! Invite a friend, or someone you want to get to know better, to co-host with you. Sometimes an extra set of hands makes all the difference!  Plus, if he or she is dating material you will find out more in one evening of hosting than you will in four dates, trust me! Everything is more fun with a friend…

How many to invite? Don’t constrain yourself by the number of chairs you have or glasses or plates….. borrow from a friend or neighbor! Have people bring their own chair– or bowl, or plate, or glass….. toss your expectation of “everything matching a la 1955 fine china advertisements” right out the window. If Michelle Obama can mix and match china patterns at the White House, then you can too!

Who to invite? Close friends, people you want to get to know better, neighbors, and maybe that guy or gal you have had your eye on? Why not?

No napkins? Hit a fabric store, get a piece of festive fabric (can be almost anything except maybe jersey or organza) and cut it into squares. If you *really* want to get arty about it, use pinking shears. Presto, your own designer napkins. The environment is better for it, and no one else will have your pattern.

Next week… What to cook?
