On a recent visit to the Greendepot flagship store on the Bowery, I came across these charming Design Ideas pencils made entirely from recycled newspaper. The pieces of newspaper are simply wrapped tightly around number two lead with adhesive, so that the pencil can in fact can be sharpened like a regular wood one. The best part (besides the fact that a set of twelve is only $2.95, and that it’s eco-friendly, of course) is that the original newsprint, in this case from an English edition of a Chinese newspaper, is still visible on the surface. It’s a product that’s certainly newsworthy for New Yorkers who want to both keep up with the times and — well, keep up with The Times.
