Summer Is Farmer’s Market Season

Summer is in full swing, which means it’s farmer’s market season! There’s really no better way to get beautiful, fresh produce, flowers, meat, eggs, and yummy baked goods, all at a major discount.

Let’s consider your shopping options:
A. Shop under the harsh fluorescent lights of the supermarket (the musak version of any Dave Matthews song is a disgrace), spending your hard earned money for pesticide-ridden apples that have been shipped 5,000 miles from Guatemala, OR…
B. Grab your reusable tote (and take your dog, too!), head outside and into the sunshine, and buy the freshest produce available while supporting your local farmers.

So, which would you choose? If you’ve never been to a farmer’s market before, they can seem a bit overwhelming at first.  So, where should  you start? Why not do a quick walk through first, taking it all in.  If you’re like me, you’ll probably buy too much the first time, too little the second. My suggestion: take a shopping list with you and then pick out two or three items that are new to you (believe it or not, rhubarb is delicious).

Want to find a market in your area? Check out: http://www.cenyc.org/greenmarket. This site is filled with info on green markets in your area. You’ll quickly discover there are many more than the famous one in Union Square.

Trust me when I tell you that you haven’t lived unless you’ve tasted cage free, pastured eggs or spinach fresh out of the ground.  Your taste buds, wallet, AND planet will be thanking you!
