So, you want to rent an apartment in New York City. What are the best ways to go about doing this, you might ask. Well…
There’s always Craigslist:
Pro: You’ll have access to more listings than you can possibly handle and it’s updated practically every minute.
Con: It’s a game of risk. Are the apartments even real? No fee generally means “the apartment is gone but I’ve got a great one for 10%”. That is of course if your e-mail doesn’t get lost in a black hole.
How about the New York Times:
Pro: The NY Times generally posts higher quality rentals. Several brokerage firms use this site for their more appealing listings. So, you’ll probably find something that you really like.
Con: Navigating their site is like a trip back to the stone age. Also, I’m not a millionaire. I’m a real person who has a limited amount of cash – that pretty much narrows down the listings to only a handful.
Something new, Naked Apartments:
Pro: Renters get access to reviewed brokers. Brokers and landlords compete to work with renters with their commission rates, quality of listings and user-generated reviews. Renters create profiles and listings come to them.
Con: Very, very new site that launched only a few months ago. They may still be working out some of the kinks.
So, finding an apartment in NYC is almost always stressful and rarely fun (until you find that perfect apartment). However, it must be done. Hope this helps guide your search. Happy Hunting!
