Lena Posner (LMT) at work
As in, literally.
A debilitating pain in my lower back/upper butt had hobbled me for the past month or so - no running, no stretching, sometimes no walking. I mean, i’m no spring chicken, but this was ridiculous. It was a weird, deep pain - not easily accessible to my usual yoga stretches. I tried ice, heat, baths, bed rest. Nada.
So I went to a trusted chiropractor, he made some adjustments, but the pain persisted. My hypochondriac tendencies bubbled up - did I need a hip replacement? Does Blue Cross cover that? Titanium or Polyethylene ? Choices, choices…
Before I started comparison shopping for the latest in artificial ball and socket joints, I decided to try something less invasive - massage. My chiropractor recommended Lena Posner (LMT) of Red Moon Massage Therapy, a recent Ithica transplant who’d set up shop on 5th Avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
After 90 minutes on the table, the pain was still there. The next day, it was worse (Lena had warned me the the intensive muscle work would probably result in some temporary pain) . I began planning my new life with a walking stick. Then, on the second day, relief. No pain. I went for a run. No pain. By the third day, I had trouble remembering there had ever been a problem.
Mine was probably a sports-related injury, but Lena offers all types of massage, including deep tissue work, prenatal, labor and postpartum massage. I’m not planning on having kids anytime soon, but I do plan to make her a regular part of my health regimen. At least until those high-impact ceramic replacement joints come down in price.
