Battery Park City was created in the late 1970's at the time when the original World Trade Center was being built. Battery Park City was planned from the beginning as a residential community for WTC and Wall Street workers. At least one third of BPC's land mass was actually put in artificially and consists of the soil dug up from underneath the World Trade Center complex's foundation. Due to its location, the neighborhood was seriously affected by the September 11th tragedy when most of its residential buildings had to be evacuated. In the years that followed, however, a thorough clean-up and rebuilding effort reestablished Battery Park City as a safe and attractive neighborhood.
