Okay, we all know that apartment hunting is a tough job, so you're going to need the right man. A good man. A man by the name of Peter Horowitz. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. He had the nicest places I saw at very decent prices. Peter charges a broker fee for a reason. He's got exclusives on apartments other brokers don't have. He's established relationships with landlords in the area that call him first when there's an upcoming vacancy. Check his website daily, and you'll see the inventory change a couple times a week.

When I chose a place (w/a view of the Empire State Building!), he told me everything up front, no surprises. It was very quick and easy dealing with Peter. So much so that eight months later, I decided to move again and immediately called him. He had a perfect place for me, so I took it. He even rented my current place so I could break my lease.

Can it be this easy? If you have Peter at your side it is!

I rented an apartment from this agent.

Thanks for your thoughtful review John. You made my day!

Peter's definitely one of the better brokers in the city. He wasn't pushy nor upselling beyond my wife and I's stated monthly limit. Peter's been genuine and quite knowledgeable of the building and neighborhood of the listing we viewed. Peter was also accommodating to my our schedules and honest about our application was refreshing.

I rented an apartment from this agent.

Peter Horowitz Responded:
Thanks so much Dexter Nothing makes me happier than to know that you love your new place. See you in the neighborhood!

I've worked with a lot of brokers in Manhattan and Astoria, and hands down, my experience working with Peter has been by far the worst.

After seeming shocked that I didn't jump on the first apartment he showed me, he showed me a second the next day, which I fell in love with. Things rapidly deteriorated after this.

45 minutes after seeing the apartment, I emailed him to reiterate that I loved it, and that I wanted to apply, but had a couple of questions first (Like, did the appliances work? Any history of roaches in the building? Etc) Less than 15 minutes later, he reposted the same apartment on his website, with a price almost $200/month HIGHER than it had been listed for. I emailed him again, and didn't get a response for over a week. When I finally heard back, he said he couldn't answer any of my questions. I asked if he could direct me to someone else who had the answers? He said no. I asked if I could see the apartment again? He said no. I asked if I could speak to the current tenants? He said no.

This saga went on for over two weeks. I finally got to see the apartment again, it was still available, but he was still unwilling to even try to negotiate the price down to what it had been listed as, telling me that I would be throwing my application fee away if I didn't offer the highest price. He actually laughed in my face on the sidewalk when I said I was only willing to pay the price he'd told me it was.

Fast forward to almost a month later... apartment is still available, and he's dropped the price back down. A phone call and three emails later, I still never heard back. My GUARANTOR heard back today that it's been rented. I still haven't heard a word from him.

I withdrew an application on another apartment when I heard this one was available, and it was due to Peter dragging his feet (again) that I lost it (again). In mid-June, I was ready to sign a lease beginning July 1, and it's taken THIS long, until JULY 15th, to wrap this saga up. And I still lost.

This is just plain old bad business, Peter. Bad business. I would advise any renters to steer clear. You can do better.

I did not rent an apartment from this agent.

Peter Horowitz Responded:
So much of what you wrote is simply not true. You did not actually submit an application and deposit. Without it you can not be considered as a viable applicant. It's nothing personal, just a policy that is relatively standard across the industry. When I showed you the apartment for the second time you did not get back to me for weeks afterwards so I rented it to someone else. I am not sure what you expected. Again, although you were encouraged to do so, you never applied for the apartment.

Apartment hunting in NYC is stressful to say the least, but brokers like Peter help to make it better. He was able to show me a place in advance of it going on the market, and left a great impression on me. He's a local guy (a resident of Astoria himself) who knows a lot about the housing stock and the character of the neighborhoods he specializes in. He graciously offered me a ride in his car back to Astoria after viewing a place in Woodside, a really nice perk on a hot summer day. During the ride we chatted and got to know each other a bit, and I knew for sure I was working with the right guy. Looking forward to finding our next place with Peter's help.

I did not rent an apartment from this agent.

Peter Horowitz Responded:
Thanks for the kind words Mark.

Never responded to my inquiry.
Peter Horowitz Responded:
This reviewer was the 2nd person to view the apartment she inquired about. We got back to her as soon as possible. She applied and was approved. She lives happily ever after in the apartment that she rented through me. Not sure why it says she did not rent from me.
